2.-8. The Ribe Vikings meet the Scandinavians and the Slaves
In the Viking Age, the important trade routes were seaborne. Ribe was as such a centre for trade in northern, southern, eastern and western directions and Ribe was certainly a trade centre in the early 700 years between Western Europe and the rest of Scandinavia.
On the market place in Ribe, beautiful, colourful glass pearls were made in large amounts. The pearls were demanded and the pearl maker from Åhus in Sweden often came back to Ribe to make more pearls. From Norway, whale bones and stones were imported for the production. The encounter between the Vikings and people from the east has been an encounter with a complete different culture with other traditions in pottery, garments, jewelry etc. Stones like mountain crystal were imported from the Black Sea. At Ribe VikingeCenter this encounter between east and west is underlined with craftsmen and traders visiting the market place this summer. Daily guided tours to the foreign craftsmen and traders, visiting Ribe VikingeCenter this summer. All tell about their techniques, trade routes and the encounter between cultures.
Try it yourself: The local coin maker is busy; make your own anniversary coin as a nice memory of Ribe in the Viking Age.
