presented by: Den Danske Skueplads
New, strong play by Sten Kaalø - about ”the Danish Bellman” - Ambrosius Stub
On the occasion of Ribe’s 1300 year anniversary, Den Danske Skueplads premieres in 2010 with Sten Kaalø’s newest play – The World Can End Now.
The plot, taking place in Ribe in the days leading up to July 15th, 1758, is a dramatically story of the greatest lyricist and rhymester of the 1700s, Ambrosius Stub (born 1705). He came to Ribe in 1752, where he lived until his death in 1758, and was buried at the cemetery of Sct. Catharinæ Church.
Ambrosius Stub wrote drinking songs, love poems, spirituals, nature lyrics, occasional poems with titles like: I make thin Caffé – The bleak winter went his way– Unforsaken my happiness - Thou beautiful rosebud–What is won with the oceans of the World – Is someone, I am happy.
The World Can End Now is an intense and poetic encounter between the poet Ambrosius Stub and the wife of the local tailor, Else Maria.
- The plot of the play, running over few days, brings two outcasts in near contact, becoming confidents. She shares her deepest secrets with him, whilst Stub tells her about his turbulent life, where he e. g. meets Ludvig Holberg, chamber master Niels Juel on Valdemar’s Castle on Tåsinge and the bishop of Ribe, Hans Adolph Brorson, residing next to Stub.
The World Can End Now is a fabulate and overwhelming fantasy, where Sten Kaalø has incorporated some of Ambrosius Stub’s wonderful poems and songs.

Why Ribe? speaks to all senses, when we guide our guests through 1300 years of town history on pavements made of gravel, over clay to bone.
Ribe’s history is told in an uncomplicated and direct way, through seven personalities, all having an opinion on how history has shaped the town. Because they were there themselves, when important events took place, or because they are present archaeologists, interpreting the traces, the past left.
